Renovating a bathroom can make a huge difference to your home, especially if it’s really dated or it’s not to your style. We spend so much time in our bathrooms that it’s important they’re a place we feel comfortable and relaxed.
While it’s a tempting and worthwhile project, ripping out your bathroom and renovating it can be expensive, take time and cause disruption if the project lasts for a long time. That’s why it’s well worth investing in quality products and materials and future-proofing your bathroom as much as possible.
By future-proofing your bathroom not only are you saving yourself the hassle of renovating again within a short space of time, you’re creating a bathroom that functions beyond the reasons you need it right now. Maybe you’re planning a family in the next few years or you’re thinking about moving a less mobile relative in – a good quality, built-to-last bathroom can be a great investment.
Here are three ways to future-proof your bathroom
1. Use high quality materials and products
If you’re renovating your home on a budget it can be tempting (or even necessary) to opt for the cheapest possible materials and products. While some inexpensive options are great, others will wear faster and need replacing more often – resulting in extra expense and more time spent on the project as the years go by.
Investing in quality materials and tools like bathroom tiles, taps, shower heads and storage furniture may mean spending more to start with but you’ll end up with a better quality finish and you won’t need to make repairs as quickly.
2. Install a walk-in bath
This tip is especially useful if you’re living with (or planning to live with) someone who is less mobile, elderly or would struggle to lower themselves in and out of a standard bath. Walk-in baths are a lovely way to enjoy a bath without struggling or worrying about slips or injury.
If you’re short on space a walk-in bath can be a great option as many are shorter in length than a standard bath, and they often come with extra features too like lighting and even spa systems.
3. Opt for a white bathroom suite
While trends change, a white bathroom suite is always popular and a good choice – especially if you’re planning on selling your home or moving in the future. Pink, blue or green bathroom suites can feel dated quite quickly and it’s harder to change the style of the room if you want to revamp the space in the future.
If you really do love a coloured bathroom suite they can be quite hard to find. Your best chance is to try and source a one on sites like eBay. Bathrooms that feature a coloured suite can look beautiful with the right styling, especially if you’re going for a retro vibe. If you plan to sell in the future though or you’re worried you might regret it, white is a safe and classic choice.
