Running your business from home can be brilliant. There are no long and boring commutes, no travel costs and you can even work in your pyjamas if the mood takes you. You can style your home office any way that you want and you don’t need to put up with colleagues borrowing your favourite mug. Best of all, it’s your business, you are working for yourself on your own terms. It has so many upsides, but as with anything, there are also downsides.
When you start your own business, it can be difficult to keep home and work life separate. It can be easy to allow the two areas to merge and before you know it you are getting the ironing done whilst you are taking a business call. Yes, you are multitasking, but is this the most efficient way to work? Probably not, but fear not as help is at hand. Today we want to share with you 3 ways to run your home business more efficiently.
Create a separate workspace
By having a separate workspace, you are giving yourself a physical division between work and home. This should help you to keep them separate from one another.
You will also be able to organise your work space efficiently so that it is set up to enable you to complete tasks without searching round for things that you need or having to find some space to work at the outset. You should be able to go straight to your desk in the morning and begin your work.
Keep set business hours
It’s your business, so you can create your own business hours to suit both your customers and your own life. This brings with it wonderful flexibility, but the key here is to keep set business hours and to stick to them.
Work out how many hours a week you need to spend on your business and then look at when you are best to work them. For example, you might look to do 9-3pm during the week, working through school hours. Or perhaps you know that you are a night owl and that’s when you do your best work, so you might settle down every evening from 7pm until midnight and be far more productive than you would ever could be during the day.
Once you decide on your hours, consider them to be your office hours and keep to them.
Streamline all bookkeeping
With every business there comes bookkeeping and tax responsibilities. It does not matter how small you might be at the outset, you will need to register as self employed with the tax office and you will then need to keep your own paperwork and file tax returns.
It is best to keep on top of this as you work, and not search around for everything that you need at the end of the tax year. File every single incoming and expenditure accurately and you will be most of the way there.
Fortunately, nowadays there are so many ways for you to work more efficiently and complete your bookkeeping tasks quickly and painlessly. There seem to be online services and packages for just about any area that you can think of, from digital VAT software to accounting packages, taking the pressure off you by saving you some time.
