How to Be More Involved in Your Child’s Education

Jun. 25, 2020 / Lifestyle

Countless studies have found that the more involved parents are in their child’s education, the more likely the child is to perform well in school. Children need support from their parents and other people around them to help encourage them, keep them motivated and boost their confidence. What’s more, if they know their parents are truly interested in their performance at school, they are more likely to try harder. Here are some tips from a prep school in Somerset to help parents become more involved in their child’s education.

Start by making sure you attend any events at the school, such as Parents’ Evening, Sports Day and school plays. Simply being present will show your child you care. This is also the case when it comes to things like homework and revision; make sure you are available to your child just in case they need your help or have any questions. If you can’t be available to your child during their homework sessions due to your job or other work commitments, try and help them in other ways. For instance, make sure they have all of the necessary learning supplies and stationery to complete their work and perhaps hire a private tutor to help them with their studies if they need it.

It’s probably a good idea to find out some information about your child’s curriculum. This will help you explore similar subjects at home. For instance, if they are learning about photosynthesis in science, you could plant some flowers at home and watch them grow.

You don’t have to wait until Parents’ Evening to speak to your child’s teachers. You might also want to have regular catchups with them throughout the year to check on your child’s progress. It’s also important to update the teachers on any changes that might be happening at home so that they can keep an eye on your youngster to ensure they’re coping. Talking to the teachers on a regular basis throughout the year will show your child that you are paying attention to their education.
