Top Tips for Helping Your Child Become More Confident

Jun. 25, 2020 / Lifestyle

Raising a happy, confident child is probably one of your biggest priorities as a parent. Unfortunately, confidence isn’t something that comes naturally to all children, or even to all adults, but it’s certainly something that parents can help cultivate. I have teamed up with a private nursery in Surrey to offer you some tips.

The most important thing you can do for your child to help them feel a sense of assurance is to provide them with a safe and secure environment where they know they have your full support regarding all of their endeavours. If their life is unstable and they’re unsure of who to rely on, they will struggle with their confidence, and even the brightest child may fail in school if they are not confident in their abilities.

Help your child feel in control of their life by ensuring they have a strong routine. This will allow them to predict what will happen next, to some extent, so they don’t have to worry about things going wrong. Allow them to have some of their own responsibilities within your home so that they know you trust them. This will also help them feel a sense of accomplishment when they complete tasks and receive your praise on a regular basis, no matter how simple these tasks may be.

Another way to help your child gain some confidence is to encourage them to join some sort of extra-curricular club where they can learn various new skills and meet new people. Discovering things they’re good at and building a strong social network will contribute to your child’s overall confidence. Children typically learn incredibly quickly when they are faced with new challenges and learning promotes self-esteem and self-belief.

Be patient with your child as their confidence won’t shoot up overnight. It will be a gradual process that will come with time and experience. Focus on using positive language when talking to your child about their behaviour and achievement; tell them when you are proud of them, let them know when they have been brave, remind them they can do it, and congratulate them when they reach their goals.
