Helping Your Child Prepare for School Exams

Sep. 20, 2020 / Lifestyle

Children get stressed sometimes, just like adults, especially when it comes to schoolwork and, most prominently, exams. Exam period can often feel quite overwhelming for young people and they sometimes battle with the mounting pressure to perform well.

In serious cases this stress can take a toll on a teenager’s physical and/or mental health. As parents, it’s crucial that we do our best to help alleviate some of this anxiety by making it easier for our kids to cope and providing them with a safe, positive home environment.

One of the best ways to relieve the stress of exams is to be well prepared. To help your teen to get ready for their exams, here are some handy tips from a private college in London.

The sooner your teenager starts the revision process, the more comfortable they will feel when they eventually walk into the exam room. They will be able to deal with any problematic areas of their education early on, with the support of their parents and teachers.

It would be wise to suggest to your child that they put together a revision timetable, either using the computer or by hand using some coloured pens and a ruler. Be there to help them if they need you and try not to make it too complex; it needs to visibly show the days and times your child needs to commit to revising for each subject, perhaps adding in a little extra time for the areas which your child finds harder.

Consider relaxation/socialising time as well, as it is imperative that they take frequent rest breaks to avoid losing their drive.

It’s also important to provide your child with an optimistic, encouraging home life where you discuss the upcoming exams with a positive and calm approach.

Your child needs to feel like they have your support, even if they don’t get the grades they were hoping for, so be sure to remind them that you are proud of how hard they’re trying and that’s all you expect from them. Knowing that you believe in them and have acknowledged the effort they’re putting in will give them the confidence they need to push through.
