How to Protect Your Home Against Cracks and Leaks

Jul. 06, 2020 / Home & Interiors

It is really important for homeowners to regularly inspect their property for cracks and leaks and take steps to waterproof their home. Left untreated, even minor cracks and leaks can lead to much bigger problems, such as damp, mould and structural damage. Here are some useful tips from Screwfast on how to effectively protect your home against cracks and leaks…

Roof

When inspecting your property for damage it is a good idea to start at the roof and work your way down. Begin by carefully examining your roof tiles. Any damaged tiles will need to be replaced or secured to prevent leaking. Roof tiles are designed to keep rain out and protect your home from the elements, so it is crucial to properly maintain them.

Gutters

It is also important to check your guttering for a build-up of leaves and debris. This can cause blockages and lead to rain water spilling over onto the walls of your home. If you notice water pouring from your guttering after it has rained, then this is likely to be the cause.

Walls

The next areas to inspect for cracks and water damage are the walls of your property and the seals around your windows. Fill any cracks found in brickwork and repair any gaps around your windows. If the window sealant has perished, you should remove this and apply a new weatherproof layer. It is also worth filling any gaps that have been left around pipes with a suitable material to prevent water from seeping inside.

Ground

Finally, it is vital to maintain the boundaries of your property and ensure that any water on the ground flows away from your home, instead of pooling. This could lead to water seeping into the foundations, causing serious structural damage. If you do notice water pooling on the ground, try to remove the water and fill or level those areas using dirt or gravel.
